Frances McAllister Leaves a Lasting Legacy

the Flagstaff P-12 Educational Resources Fund is Frances McAllister's legacy to her community.

Frances McAllister’s legacy is nothing short of legendary. During her lifetime, the philanthropist supported countless Flagstaff nonprofits through generous gifts, board service, and a heartfelt belief in their importance to the community. Today, Frances’ passionate support of education lives on through her planned gift to ACF of Flagstaff. Since 2000, the Flagstaff P-12 Educational Resources Fund has granted $2.6 million to local organizations to help increase unique experiential learning opportunities for children in Flagstaff.

Organizations apply for funds through the annual ACF of Flagstaff competitive grant cycle. A panel of volunteers rates the proposals based on Frances’ wish to support experiential learning and the whole child with an emphasis on the outdoors, including the Arboretum at Flagstaff.

The Arboretum was founded by Frances in 1981 and remained close to her heart throughout her life. The Arboretum has received numerous grants in support of its array of educational programming, including the EcoExplorers Summer Camps for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. With the guidance of their counselors, campers get hands-on experience identifying native edible and medicinal plants, exploring the pond ecosystem, and navigating through the forest using a map and compass.
